CPD CERTIFICATE IN AFRIkAN-CENTRED INTERCULTURAL THERAPY™

About:

Afrikan-Centred Intercultural Therapy™ (ACIT) is an eclectic approach integrating Afrikan-centred thought and Intercultural psychotherapy, which addresses culture, ethnicity, identity and spirituality (CEIS), when working therapeutically to support individual mental health needs. The psychological impact of issues that affect racialised and minoritized groups are observed through a trauma informed lens. These elements are integral to working with persons from minority ethnic groups.

Why the approach was developed:

The multiple layers that contribute to the complexities of healing from trauma, particularly for minority ethnic groups is often entangled with racial and cultural considerations, that are often inadequately covered in core counselling training. This lack of coverage on racial-cultural diversity, the impact of institutional racism and intersectionality, can contribute towards psychological practitioners and mental health workers lacking essential cultural competencies.

Afrikan-Centred Intercultural Therapy™  (ACIT) was developed to address this by exploring the psycho-social impact of the legacy of colonialism. The training considers aspects of the psycho-social behaviours and outputs of racial social constructs and systematic and systemic racism.  It aims to develop intercultural communication skills and deepen racial trauma awareness.

What is Afrikan-centred Therapy?

Afrikan-centred therapy is relational in nature and is founded upon a humility approach to life. It promotes healing through interconnectedness with mind, body, spirit and the universe. Ancestral appreciation and community collectiveness aids the process of identifying your 'true self' through an Afrikan-centred lens. In addition to generational considerations, a safe space to explore racialised experiences and racial trauma is essential to the healing process for marginalized, minoritized & racialised groups.

Why Intercultural psychotherapy?

Intercultural Psychotherapy is culturally sensitive talking therapy. It considers racial-cultural beliefs and practices, spirituality and other intersectionality aspects. Intercultural practitioners benefit from exploring and reflecting on their own cultural identity in addition to facilitating the space for clients to explore theirs in a safe space.  Recognition of the impact of racial adversities within the therapeutic process is fundamental to intercultural therapy.
